The new model features a refreshed exterior with a redesigned hood, grille, headlights, fog lights, upper and lower bumper, and antenna. The interior has received a new center instrument panel with a modified gauge cluster and a new steering wheel. Toyota now offers the following as standard equipment: a high-contrast black center console, switch-plate covers, dash and upper door trim.

Access and Double Cab models may get the heavy-duty all-weather flooring. Meanwhile, the TRD Sport and Off-Road models come with water-resistant fabric-protection seats. The Entune multimedia system will be featured in the Tacoma. Entune consists of a series of apps and data services such as Bing and Pandora, with three-year period of service. By connecting a smartphone to the system, all the features could be operated either by vehicle controls or voice recognition.

For the 2012 model year, two engine options are offered. Offered as standard is a 2.7-liter I4, with an output of 159 hp. Meanwhile, the 236-hp, 4.0-liter V6 is optional. These two engines offer variable valve timing. Controlling the V6 can be done with either a six-speed manual transmission or a five-speed automatic. The four-cylinder model is available with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. The range-topping model is priced at $28,645, featuring the V6, four-wheel-drive and the double cab.
